As Galati city has always been a strong university center, the Galati-Braila Metropolitan Area has developed in this direction, knowing a real expansion of state and private universities. Today, with about 25,000 students, GBMA occupies the 7th place in Romania, the population having a high level of education (the students represent 16.29% of the total school population).

Besides the traditional universities (shipbuilding, mechanical and industrial engineering, food, computer, economics and administration) that attract students throughout the country and also from Moldova, there can be noticed an improvement of the forms of participation of the universities to the international cooperation, by promoting international projects. An immediate consequence of these activities is the increasing number of foreign students in Galati-Braila Metropolitan Area.
